Statistics shows that about “18.5 million children are out of school in Nigeria, in a country where government’s primary owned schools are close to free”.
On the other hand, majority of the pupils in government owned primary schools are not meeting minimum standards of literacy skills due to several factors such as inadequate basic facilities, inadequate human capacity e.t.c.
It has been observed that students who struggle to read are more likely to drop out of school, especially those in economic disadvantaged areas. Thus, poor reading ability might affect student’s performance in other subjects.
